Video Summary
In the video, the speaker discusses meniscus tears, specifically medial meniscus posterior root tears (MMPRTs). These tears result in the loss of hoop stress and increased contact forces on the knee. The menisciotibial (MT) ligament, which stabilizes and centralizes the meniscus, plays a crucial role in preventing extrusion. However, recent studies have shown that even with root repair, extrusion is not always corrected, suggesting additional factors are involved. The purpose of the study was to understand the association between the MT ligament, meniscus extrusion, and subsequent root tears. MRIs from 2010 to 2020 were reviewed, and it was found that MT ligament disruption and extrusion were present prior to root tear in all patients. Extrusion increased over time, and some patients eventually required arthroplasty. The findings suggest that MT ligament disruption and extrusion play an early role in meniscus root tear, and highlight the need for MT ligament repair along with root repair.
