It's my honor now to introduce Anna's innovations lecturer, George Muschler. We all know extraordinary arthroscopic and sports surgeons, and we all have come into contact with extraordinary basic scientists. A much more rare individual is the person who can combine the rigors of both fields into one career. George graduated from Northwestern Medical School, then did his orthopedic residency at University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas. From there, he went to New York, to Memorial Sloan Kettering, to complete a musculoskeletal oncology fellowship, and also to HSS, where he did a musculoskeletal research and metabolic bone disease fellowship. He has a national reputation in reconstructive surgery for arthritis, failed joint replacements, fractured nonunion, and treatment of limb deformities, and is a leader in skeletal reconstruction, bone regeneration, and fracture repair. After he established a program of patient-oriented outcomes assessment for hip and knee replacements, performed at Cleveland Clinic in the late 90s, he was appointed research associate in the Cleveland Clinic Office of Clinical Effectiveness. He is also a member of the Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Center, leading research related to aging and adult stem cell therapies and transplantation. In addition to his commitment to patient care, George is vice chairman of the Department of Biomedical Engineering with the Cleveland Clinic's Lerner Research Institute, where he directs the bone biology laboratory. The lab is focused on the development of improved methods for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. George's work has provided insight into the effects of aging on stem cells, and the importance and application of these cells in development of osteoporosis, bone disease, and in the broader area of tissue repair. George executes on the mission of innovation with every facet of his career. He is an innovator in both implant design for joint surgery and limb reconstruction, as well as in the application of biological principles of tissue regeneration. The most recent tribute to his scientific contributions occurred this year, when he was inducted as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences. It is my pleasure to introduce Anna's innovation lecturer, Dr. George Muschler, for his address, entitled Innovation, Asking Questions, Solving Problems, Creating Opportunity.
