Video Summary
The webinar, moderated by Dr. Michael Kuhn, focused on MACI (autologous cultured chondrocytes on a porcine collagen membrane) and its newer arthroscopic technique, MACI Arthro, for treating full-thickness cartilage defects in the knee. The panel introduced the product’s indications, contraindications, adverse effects, and the importance of patient selection, including alignment, meniscal status, and ligament stability.

Dr. Brian Godshall and Dr. Ilan Golan discussed surgical technique, emphasizing direct access, careful defect preparation, portal flexibility, and using specialized arthroscopic instruments and cannulas. They highlighted that the arthroscopic approach can be applied to accessible lesions in the knee and may be combined with other procedures. The team also reviewed insurance approval support and patient assistance resources.

Monica Sheridan, PT, outlined rehabilitation principles: individualized progression, monitoring pain/swelling, gradual return of range of motion and weight-bearing, strengthening, and eventual sport-specific training. She stressed that graft maturation and functional readiness should guide return to activity.

Case examples illustrated complex real-world use, including patients with ACL injury, patellar instability, varus malalignment, bipolar lesions, and combined procedures such as HTO, MPFL reconstruction, and meniscal repair. Overall, the session promoted MACI Arthro as a reliable, reproducible, minimally invasive option for appropriately selected patients.
