STATEMENT OF NEED

A need for the Comprehensive Arthroscopy Self-Examination (CASE)  has been identified from information gathered from education surveys, education course evaluations and data from previous Self Assessment programs. The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) Maintenance of Certification program will evaluate a competent physician using the four components specified by the ABMS including Part II: Evidence of Life-Long Learning and Self-Assessment which will be addressed through 240 credits of Category 1 Continuing Medical Education (CME) that include a minimum of 40 CME credits of Self-Assessment Examinations (SAE).

TARGET AUDIENCE

The primary target audience of theComprehensive Arthroscopy Self-Examination (CASE)  is orthopaedic surgeons and physicians in the field of arthroscopy who desire to improve their arthroscopic knowledge and skills.
Description of Arthroscopy Self-Examination
The Comprehensive Arthroscopy Self-Examination (CASE): Shoulder is offered in a web-based format. The web-based format is an online interactive database that contains 118 multiple choice questions, associated images, explanations, answers, bibliographic references and an evaluation form. Participants will use their AANA ID and Password or be issued a username and password to access the web-based version and will be able to answer questions and obtain individual and normative group scores as well as the explanation and answers to questions. Participants will complete the Self-Examination using the Examination mode (no feedback is provided until all 118 questions are completed and submitted for scoring). Preferred responses and references will be provided when each question has been answered.

Participants will be asked to complete an evaluation of the Comprehensive Arthroscopy Self-Examination (CASE) to obtain feedback about the enduring educational activity. The participant may take the Comprehensive Arthroscopy Self-Examination (CASE) multiple times during the year but AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ will only be awarded the first time the participant successfully completes all questions and the evaluation. Normative data collected will only be recorded the first time the participant completes all questions and the evaluation.

Beginning July 1, 2011, the AMA stipulates that CME credit "should be awarded only to physicians who meet at least the minimum performance level on the assessment as established by the accredited CME provider." As an ACCME accredited CME provider, AANA established the minimum performance level on the Comprehensive Arthroscopy Self-Examination (CASE) at 70%. Per the AMA, physicians who do not achieve this minimum performance level may reset the Comprehensive Arthroscopy Self-Examination and retake the examination as many times as necessary to achieve the minimum performance level of 70%. There will be no additional charge for resetting and retaking the examination.
