PURPOSE

The Arthroscopy Self-Assessment Program (ASAP) was developed to identify strengths and weaknesses in the clinical areas of orthopaedic sports medicine. It is also designed to assist practicing physicians and surgeons to maintain their certification and help fulfill Part II of Maintenance of Certification (MOC) requirements.

STATEMENT OF NEED

A need for the Arthroscopy Self-Assessment Program (ASAP) has been identified from information gathered from education surveys, education course evaluations and data from previous Self Assessment programs. The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) Maintenance of Certification program will evaluate a competent physician using the four components specified by the ABMS including Part II: Evidence of Life-Long Learning and Self-Assessment which will be addressed through 240 credits of Category 1 Continuing Medical Education (CME) that include a minimum of 40 CME credits of Self-Assessment Examinations (SAE).

TARGET AUDIENCE

The primary target audience of the Arthroscopy Self-Assessment Program (ASAP) is orthopaedic surgeons and physicians in the field of arthroscopy who desire to improve their arthroscopic knowledge and skills.

The Arthroscopy Self-Assessment Program (ASAP) is offered in a web-based format. The web-based format is an online interactive database that contains 100 multiple choice questions, associated images, explanations, answers, bibliographic references and an evaluation form. Participants will use their AANA ID and Password or be issued a username and password to access the web-based version and will be able to answer questions and obtain individual and normative group scores as well as the explanation and answers to questions. Participants will complete the Self Assessment using the Examination mode (no feedback is provided until all 100 questions are completed and submitted for scoring). Preferred responses and references will be provided when each question has been answered.

Participants will be asked to complete an evaluation of the Arthroscopy Self-Assessment Program (ASAP) to obtain feedback about the enduring educational activity. The participant may take the Arthroscopy Self-Assessment Program (ASAP) multiple times during the year but AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ will only be awarded the first time the participant successfully completes all questions and the evaluation. Normative data collected will only be recorded the first time the participant completes all questions and the evaluation.

Beginning July 1, 2011, the AMA stipulates that CME credit "should be awarded only to physicians who meet at least the minimum performance level on the assessment as established by the accredited CME provider." As an ACCME accredited CME provider, AANA established the minimum performance level on the Arthroscopy Self- Assessment Program at 70%. Per the AMA, physicians who do not achieve this minimum performance level may reset the Arthroscopy Self-Assessment Program and retake the examination as many times as necessary to achieve the minimum performance level of 70%. There will be no additional charge for resetting and retaking the examination.
At the conclusion of this Arthroscopy Self-Assessment Program (ASAP) activity, participants should be able to:
  1. Review evolving basic science concepts for the upper and lower extremity in order update this aspect of knowledge.
  2. Identify new or evolving clinical concepts and developments for arthroscopy, soft tissue repair & reconstruction in order update this aspect of knowledge.
  3. Apply appropriate treatment protocols for the management of specific conditions in the knee, shoulder, hip, elbow, wrist, and ankle.

The Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ Designation
The Arthroscopy Association of North America designates this Other educational activity for a maximum of 20 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

The American Medical Association has determined that physicians not licensed in the US who participate in this CME activity are eligible for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.

In addition, this Scored and Recorded Self-Assessment Exam (SAE) counts toward the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery MOC Part II requirement.
