Arthroscopy Self-Assessment Program – Sports Medicine
Description

Arthroscopy Association of North America

Arthroscopy Self-Assessment Program (ASAP) Version 4

PURPOSE

The Arthroscopy Self-Assessment Program (ASAP) was developed to identify strengths and weaknesses in the clinical areas of orthopaedic sports medicine. It is also designed to assist practicing physicians and surgeons to maintain their certification and help fulfill Component 2 of Maintenance of Certification (MOC) requirements.

STATEMENT OF NEED

A need for the Arthroscopy Self-Assessment Program has been identified from information gathered from education surveys, education course evaluations and data from previous Self Assessment programs.  The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) Maintenance of Certification program will evaluate a competent physician using the four components specified by the ABMS including Component 2: Evidence of Life-Long Learning and Self-Assessment which will be addressed through on-going, three-year cycles of 120 credits of Category 1 Orthopaedic or relevant Continuing Medical Education (CME) that includes a minimum of 20 CME credits of Self-Assessment Examinations (SAE).

TARGET AUDIENCE
The primary target audience of the Arthroscopy Self-Assessment Program is orthopaedic surgeons and physicians in the field of arthroscopy who desire to improve their arthroscopic knowledge and skills.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of the Arthroscopy Self-Assessment Program activity, participants should be able to:

1) Review new and evolving basic science concepts and developments in the shoulder and elbow, and update this aspect of knowledge.

2) Identify new and evolving clinical concepts and developments for shoulder and elbow arthroscopy, arthroplasty, soft tissue repair & reconstruction, and fracture; and update this aspect of knowledge.

3) Apply appropriate treatment protocols for the management of specific conditions in shoulder and elbow arthroscopy, arthroplasty, soft tissue repair & reconstruction, and fracture.

QUESTION WRITERS/PLANNING COMMITTEE

The Arthroscopy Association of North America is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

CME CREDIT DESIGNATION

The Arthroscopy Association of North America designates this enduring educational activity for a maximum of 10 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

The American Medical Association has determined that physicians not licensed in the US who participate in this CME activity are eligible for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.

DISCLAIMER/TERMS OF USE

The information provided in this CME enduring activity is for continuing medical education purposes only and is not meant to be a substitute for the independent medical judgment of a health care provider relative to the diagnostic, management, and treatment options of a specific patient’s medical condition. The methods, techniques, and procedures demonstrated and views and opinions expressed by question writers are their own, and do not necessarily represent those of AANA.  The individual agrees to participate in this continuing medical education activity provided by the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) with full knowledge and awareness that they waive any claim that they may have against AANA for reliance on any information presented in the Arthroscopy Self-Assessment Program (ASAP).

CONFLICT OF INTEREST DISCLOSURE STATEMENT

In accordance with the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) Standards for Commercial Support, (SCS 2.3) it is the policy of the Arthroscopy Association of North America that all planners, teachers, and authors who are in a position to control the content of an education activity are required to disclose to AANA, the accredited provider and the learners, all relevant financial relationships.  An individual has a relevant financial relationship if he/she (or spouse/partner) has a financial relationship in any dollar amount that has occurred during the previous 12 months with a commercial interest whose products or services are discussed in the CME activity content over which the individual has control. A "commercial interest" is defined as any entity producing, marketing, re-selling, or distributing health care goods or services consumed by, or used on, patients.  The ACCME Standards for Commercial Support (SCS 2.3) requires accredited providers to resolve all identified potential conflicts of interest with any individual in a position to influence and/or control the content of CME activities prior to the education activity being delivered to learners.  AANA has implemented mechanisms prior to the planning and implementation of each CME activity, to identify and mitigate conflicts of interest for all individuals in a position to control the content.  All Conflict of Interest Disclosures are reviewed by the Compliance Committee and provided here for the program participants.

DESCRIPTION OF SELF ASSESSMENT

The Arthroscopy Self-Assessment Program (ASAP) is offered in a web-based format. The time it will take participants to complete the Arthroscopy Self-Assessment Program (ASAP) is approximately 10 hours.  The web-based format is an online interactive database that contains 100 multiple choice questions, associated images, explanations, answers, bibliographic references and an evaluation form. Participants will use their AANA ID and Password or be issued a username and password to access the web-based version and will be able to answer questions and obtain individual and normative group scores as well as the explanation and answers to questions. Participants will complete the Self Assessment using the Examination mode (no feedback is provided until all 100 questions are completed and submitted for scoring). Preferred responses and references will be provided when each question has been answered.

Participants will be asked to complete an evaluation of the Arthroscopy Self-Assessment Program (ASAP) to obtain feedback about the enduring educational activity. The participant may take the Arthroscopy Self-Assessment Program (ASAP) multiple times during the year but AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ will only be awarded the first time the participant successfully completes all questions and the evaluation. Normative data collected will only be recorded the first time the participant completes all questions and the evaluation.

Beginning July 1, 2011, the AMA stipulates that CME credit "should be awarded only to physicians who meet at least the minimum performance level on the assessment as established by the accredited CME provider." As an ACCME accredited CME provider, AANA established the minimum performance level on the Arthroscopy Self- Assessment Program at 51%. Per the AMA, physicians who do not achieve this minimum performance level may reset the Arthroscopy Self-Assessment Program and retake the examination as many times as necessary to achieve the minimum performance level of 51%. There will be no additional charge for resetting and retaking the examination.

CME
Your CME credits will be recorded upon successful completion of the Arthroscopy Self-Assessment Program and evaluation form. A CME certification of completion in PDF  format will be sent to you via email once you have completed the Arthroscopy Self-Assessment Program (ASAP) and evaluation form.

COST, REGISTRATION and TERMS OF USE

The cost of participating in the Arthroscopy Self-Assessment Program (ASAP) is based on the pricing structure set forth by AANA.  A participant can register for the product one time and may take the Arthroscopy Self-Assessment Program (ASAP) multiple times during the year; however AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ will only be awarded the FIRST time the participant successfully completes all questions and evaluation. The web-based version of the Arthroscopy Self-Assessment Program (ASAP) will be available until November 30, 2020.
